Spring is just around the corner which means its about the time of year that I get bombarded with inquiries for spring engagement photos! As a Charlottesville wedding photographer I love getting requests for spring sessions because of the warmth and beauty that the season brings. Here is a session from last spring to inspire you while I break down all the tips for spring engagement photos!
Before anything else, we need to decide on the location. The location will give you a backdrop that will not only frame you, but also embody the vibe you are going for. Looking for something more sophisticated? Consider Hotel Madison. Or maybe you want a more casual and urban feel on a downtown, like these couple Christmas photos. No matter what style you are going for, I have a location for you!
The best time of day for photos is golden hour to get that soft and warm glow from the setting sun. So if your schedule allows, we will plan your engagement photos during that time! In addition, in the spring the sunset takes a bit more time to set compared to the colder months so we will have more flexibility in evening time slots.
Be prepared for unpredictable weather. Spring in Virginia is known for many wonderful things: bright green meadows, budding flowers, and… rain. If we are expecting a down pour, then we will definitely reschedule! However, rainy engagement photos with clear umbrellas can be magically adventurous. Consider sticking with your original time and having a one of a kind session!
Your wardrobe will be determined by so many factors! Your location, the weather, wedding color palette, the list goes on. With so many ideas out there for spring engagement photo outfits, I know you will find the right inspiration for you. But the most important thing for choosing your wardrobe is to make sure you are staying true to your personal style and are comfortable in what you are wearing!
The most important part of your engagement photos outfit may just be your shoes. This rings especially true for my couples planning on a Shenandoah engagement session. If you are planning on exploring, even a little bit, bring comfortable close toed shoes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. We never know exactly how the trails will look, and I’d rather you be safe than sorry! Then when we get to our location you can switch into your pretty shoes.
I will always tell you to wear what you are most comfortable in, however I will also always encourage softer makeup looks for photos. Wear what you would in your everyday, but elevate it a little. Meaning add sparkle to your eyeshadow, a little more blush than usual, or a more shaped brow. Don’t try something completely new and out of your comfort zone.
As a Charlottesville wedding photographer I love to get a good mix of both candid and posed photos. Keeping interaction authentic and candid makes for the most memorable photos, which is always my goal!
