I think any of the Charlottesville photographers you run into will tell you that they love celebrating with their couples. And when I think of celebrating as a couple usually I think of engagement photos, pictures with a new pup, Charlottesville wedding photography, or even maternity pictures! However, couple graduation photos are another way to celebrate the milestones you have taken on together!
Let’s start planning with choosing a location for your shoot! I recommend photographing graduation photos on campus. Not only does every campus have beautiful grounds that are well kept. But they also hold iconic location for your specific university, giving your graduation photos a personal touch. Think of the library, the quad, the buildings you have spent most of your time in your major. All great places to start!
Next, plan out your attire. We will want to get the classic grad pictures of you in your graduation robes and caps, so for these I recommend wearing either white or black. A stark neutral will bring the focus to your robe, also these are just classic looks! In addition, choose a coordinating outfit with your partner for your couple graduation photos afterwards. These photos will have more of a couples session feel to them than graduation. Choosing to coordinate with your school colors in a more casual fit is a great option!
I already mentioned bringing your graduation robe and cap, but there are other props you can bring for a more personalized gallery. If this photoshoot is post ceremonies and you have your diploma, bring it! Also consider any school pride banners, football foam fingers, or any item/outfit you would have from extra curricular clubs. Oh, and don’t forget something to celebrate with like confetti, balloons, or sparkling cider to pop!
Basically any pose I normally capture while photographing couples I can capture for couples graduation photos. But, there are a few more that are specific to grads that I like to include such as candid moments of helping each other with your caps, poses with you holding out your caps together, and moments together in front of meaningful buildings and locations on your campus.
